Construction begins on Barwon Health North facility

Families in Geelong’s northern suburbs are one step closer to having additional health services with the first sod turned on the Barwon Health North project this week.

The sod turn marks the beginning of construction on the $33 million flagship health hub which will feature an urgent care centre, medical imaging facilities, pathology, pharmacy, consulting suites and renal dialysis services.

When complete, the new Barwon Health North facility will ensure more Geelong families will have better and quicker access to the very best and safest healthcare in purpose built facilities, right on their doorstep.

The new drop-in facility will be a welcome addition to the existing health services provided by Barwon Health at University Hospital Geelong and take pressure off the busy emergency department.

Once Barwon Health North opens its doors, patients nursing illnesses or injuries such as sprains, cuts or minor infections will be able to receive treatment on the spot, without an appointment – during business hours and on weekends.

The Corio Community Health Centre, which is also run by Barwon Health, will continue to operate and complement the range of services available at Barwon Health North.

The new urgent care facility will not only support the health needs of Geelong’s north but it will also be a big boost for the local economy with more than 130 construction jobs being created.

Construction on Barwon Health North will be complete in mid-2019.
