What is a community hospital?

"The Victorian population is growing, and with more people — people like Wilson... and Emily... and their families — come more healthcare challenges.

That’s why we’re building community hospitals.

Maybe you’re like Wilson and live in a suburb like Craigieburn. Or perhaps you live regionally, like Emily in Torquay. A community hospital will give you more locally-available public healthcare options and reduce the time you spend travelling to major hospitals or specialist appointments.

If you’re like Emily, you might need to transfer to another facility or service, but that’s easy too. Community hospitals will link with major hospitals, specialists and local healthcare providers to connect health and social services.

And we know that different communities, like people, have different healthcare needs, so we’ve formed a consultative committee to make sure you are represented in the health and social services your community hospital offers.

Services like management of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer, various day procedures, family and early childhood services, alcohol and other drug services, and dental and pharmacy services.

Existing health facilities in Craigieburn, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Phillip Island, Sunbury and Torquay will be upgraded and expanded and new community hospitals will be built in the City of Whittlesea, Eltham, Point Cook and Fishermans Bend.

In total, ten facilities will be built close to major growth areas, changing the way Victorians like Wilson... and Emily... and you... access healthcare.
