Bigger Austin Hospital emergency department on the way

An upgraded Austin Hospital emergency department is one step closer, with main works now underway.

The new three-storey building will add up to 29 extra emergency treatment spaces.

When fully operational, this will allow the dedicated doctors, nurses and medical staff of Austin Health to support an extra 30,000 emergency patients each year.

The upgrade will also deliver:

  • improved clinical administration areas
  • an upgraded short stay unit and expanded staff amenities, which will create better services on site for patients, families and healthcare workers.

[End of transcript]

The first phase of construction involves the:

  • establishment of site sheds
  • demolition of the facades at the entrances to both the Austin Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women
  • creation of access tunnels to allow people to move between the two hospitals while works take place.

Wayfinding, signage and volunteers will be in place to help guide people where they need to go.

The Austin Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women will remain open and operational during construction.

The upgrade is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Austin Health and Mercy Health.
