To create a safe and comfortable feel for residents, rooms are grouped into small households, with separate kitchen and dining areas.

The centre also features a community room, sacred space and other common areas for residents and their family and friends to enjoy.

Natural light and garden views create a calm and welcoming environment.

Dementia-friendly design

People with dementia account for 52 per cent of residents in all residential aged care facilities. This number is even higher in public sector residential aged care services.

Dementia-friendly environments are created using a flexible approach that maximises people’s freedom and involvement through supportive, familiar, meaningful and safe surroundings.

The Boollam Boollam Aged Care Centre uses colours to encourage natural movements throughout the building and into outdoor areas. This makes it simple and intuitive for residents to move around, maintaining their independence and avoiding confusion and anxiety.

What’s in a name

Formerly known as the Kingston Centre Residential Aged Care Facility, the Boollam Boollam Aged Care Centre’s name was gifted by the Bunurong Land Council.

Meaning ‘butterflies’ in the language of the Kulin Nation, the name reflects transformation and the journey of life, making it a fitting symbol for the aged care setting.

Location

The Boollam Boollam Aged Care Centre is managed by Monash Health. It’s located at the Kingston Centre where residents will have easy access to a range of integrated healthcare, including:

  • dementia and memory services
  • clinics for falls and balances
  • age-appropriate mental health services.

Putting local jobs first

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Monash Health and builder Icon, the project created and sustained more than 240 construction industry jobs. The project will also create job opportunities within the aged care sector.
