Local students help bring central green space to life at new Footscray Hospital

Students from Footscray Primary School rolled up their sleeves to help with planting in the central green space at the new hospital.

More than 320 trees and 55,000 plants will transform the site into a welcoming green space for patients, staff and the community.

All are grown by Yarra View Nursery, a local social disability enterprise who provide high quality, meaningful employment and training for adults living with a disability.

The Wurundjeri Land Council helped guide the plant selections with silver wattles selected for their cultural connection to the Footscray area.

The landscape design was inspired by the Maribyrnong River and the local landscape.

With every tree planted, these students are taking part in providing a healing and more vibrant space for their community.

Construction progress

The new Footscray Hospital is in its final year of major construction, with work focusing on the internal fit-out, installation of services, and landscaping.

More than six million hours of work have been completed by around 1,000 workers on the site to date.

Intersection works are now underway at the Ballarat Road and Geelong Road entrances of the hospital.

Major construction of the new Footscray Hospital is expected to be completed in late 2025.
