Sunshine Hospital’s new emergency department opens its doors
Families in Melbourne’s western suburbs will receive faster access to emergency care, with a $34.9 million redevelopment of Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department now complete.
Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department is one of Victoria’s busiest. Each year, it treats about 65,000 patients.
The redevelopment has so far added 55 spaces, more than doubling current capacity, and includes:
- a medical imaging suite
- a new paediatric unit for children needing urgent care
- an expanded administration area
- upgraded staff amenities.
The paediatric unit will provide a calmer and more positive space for children, enabling 19,700 kids to be seen each year.
Opening later this year, the redevelopment will also refurbish the existing emergency department providing 10 additional spaces, a new resus area, and behaviour assessment unit.
Once the refurbishment is complete, Sunshine Hospital’s new emergency department will be able to treat an extra 59,000 patients each year.
