Mansfield District Hospital residential aged care development

Location 86-92 Highett Street, Mansfield, Victoria, 3722, Australia

The Victorian Government is investing $62.8 million to redevelop the residential aged care facilities at Mansfield District Hospital.

The project will:

  • build a new 30-bed residential aged care facility to replace the Buckland House
  • refurbish Bindaree Retirement Centre
  • refurbish Buckland House for community use.

The redeveloped residential aged care facilities at Mansfield District Hospital will provide an environment that is dementia friendly, and better suited to supporting the mental health and complex care needs of older Victorians.

Residents will have their own single bedroom and private ensuite, as well as flexible shared spaces that encourage social connection.

The project is part of the Victorian Government’s ‘Rural and Regional Public Sector Residential Aged Care Services Revitalisation’ strategy, which will build new or transform existing residential aged care facilities that better meet community expectations and promote resident independence, dignity and mental health.

DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY DESIGN

The Mansfield District Hospital residential aged care development project will deliver the following stages of works:

New residential aged care facility

  • 30 single bedrooms with ensuites, open area views and natural light, grouped into ‘small households’ with kitchen, dining and lounge areas
  • features to support a range of complex care and mobility needs, including those living with dementia
  • landscaped sensory gardens that are easily accessible from each household
  • flexible shared spaces and common areas for socialising and resident activities
  • pandemic design response features to reduce the risk of infectious outbreaks.

Refurbishment of Bindaree Retirement Centre

  • updated bedrooms with private ensuites
  • a new entrance
  • new administration and staff support areas
  • new community rooms, including personal care room, activity rooms and a café.

Refurbishment of Buckland House

  • repurposed for community use including office spaces and activity rooms.

The redeveloped residential aged care facility in Mansfield aims to achieve the following benefits:

Specialist care

The redeveloped residential aged care facility will improve access to high quality facilities and care. It will meet a range of complex needs so residents can age in place as their health needs increase. Residents with dementia will have a purpose-built facility relevant to their needs.

A home-like environment

Residents will have improved privacy and independence with single rooms and ensuites.

Person-centred care

Public aged care services play a vital role in supporting our most vulnerable older Victorians. They provide specialist care for residents with complex physical or mental health needs. With a focus on mobility and dementia-friendly design, this new and upgraded facility aims to deliver high-quality person-centred care and better support independence and mental health.

Connection to the natural environment

The facility’s design will allow residents to enjoy open area views and natural light from their bedrooms. Residents will have access to new outdoor spaces that promote physical and mental wellbeing as well as encourage increased social interaction.

Close to home

Greater access to high-quality care in Mansfield means older people won’t have to move away to access residential aged care. Residents will be close to their support networks and will be able to maintain family and community connections.

Enhanced community connection

Multipurpose common areas will support residents to have meaningful engagement in activities and promote family and community connections.

Supporting construction jobs

More than 660 construction workers have contributed to the project so far, supporting local jobs and the local economy.

This project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with:

  • Mansfield District Hospital
  • ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects
  • A W Nicholson (builder).
