Alfred Hospital Infrastructure Upgrade Project

Location 55 Commercial Road, Melbourne, Victoria, 3004, Australia

The Alfred Hospital is a keystone of the Victorian Health System – treating Victoria’s most acute and complex patients. It is one of Victoria’s longest running major tertiary health services and one of only two adult trauma centres in Victoria.

To support the Alfred Hospital’s lifesaving work, the Victorian Government is investing $292.5 million to upgrade existing infrastructure at the hospital.

The project will create new inpatient wards and an Intensive Care Unit in the hospital’s Philip Block and refurbish wards across the Main Ward Block - while also enhancing fire safety and reinforcing critical infrastructure services such as the air handling units, electrical infrastructure and the heating and cooling plant.

When complete, the upgrades will improve patient experience and provide a better working environment for healthcare workers - future proofing the Alfred Hospital for generations to come.

ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Founded in 1871, the Alfred Hospital is Melbourne's oldest hospital still operating at its original site, on the corner of Commercial and Punt Road. Many of the hospital’s buildings were constructed in the 1960s.

The $292.5 million Alfred Hospital Infrastructure Upgrade Project will refurbish and upgrade two levels of the Philip Block to include a new Intensive Care Unit and inpatient ward. The project will also refurbish wards on the Main Ward Block.

New fire safety systems and reinforcing critical infrastructure such as the air handling units, electrical systems, and the heating and cooling plant will also be delivered as part of the project.

The Alfred Hospital Infrastructure Upgrade Project aims to achieve the following benefits.

Future proofing the Alfred Hospital

The Alfred Hospital is a keystone of the Victorian Health System – treating Victoria’s most acute and complex patients as one of only two adult trauma centres in Victoria.

It was founded in 1871 and is Melbourne's oldest hospital still operating at its original site on the corner of Commercial and Punt Road. The site features buildings of various ages, with much of the core infrastructure and many buildings constructed in the 1960s.

These important upgrades will help future-proof the Alfred Hospital – ensuring generations to come can continue to access the world-class care the Alfred Hospital is known for.

Improved patient experience and staff safety

Upgraded inpatient wards and a new Intensive Care Unit will deliver a safer and more efficient workplace for staff, and seamless care for patients.

Jobs

When construction hits its peak, the project is expected to create and sustain hundreds of jobs in the construction sector and associated industries.

To limit impact on patients and staff, the Alfred Hospital Infrastructure Upgrade Project is being delivered in carefully planned stages. This ensures the Alfred Hospital can continue its lifesaving work without services being interrupted and maintaining care for the community.

Enabling works: To pave the way for construction to start, consulting and administrative services in the Philip Block are being moved to a new location at 549 St Kilda Road.

Early works: The project’s early works will demolish internal areas on levels 2 and 4 of the Philip Block to accommodate a new Intensive Care Unit and inpatient ward.

Main works: The project’s main works involve constructing a new Intensive Care Unit and inpatient ward in the Philip Block, refurbishing wards on the Main Ward Block and, enhancing fire safety, and reinforcing critical infrastructure systems such as the air handling units, electrical systems, heating and cooling plant and sewer and potable water pipework infrastructure.

This project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with:
