Northern Hospital expansion - Stage 2

Location 185 Cooper Street, Epping, Victoria, 3076, Australia

The Victorian Government invested $162.7 million to expand the Northern Hospital in Epping.

The second stage of the Northern Hospital expansion delivered three new operating theatres, including one hybrid theatre. It also added 96 acute inpatient beds, a 28-bed pandemic ward, an 18-bed intensive care unit, and a 10-bed cardiac care unit.

The population in Melbourne’s outer north is expected to double by 2031. The expansion will help the Northern Hospital meet future demand for emergency and healthcare services.  Additional capacity and services will allow up to 10,000 more patients in the Hume, Whittlesea and Mitchell communities to receive treatment each year.

Stage 1, completed in June 2016, saw the development of a three-storey tower and 32-bed inpatient unit, connected to the main hospital via an aerial link.

Stage 2 increased the tower from three to seven floors. This provided space for improved facilities and extra room to meet future needs.

The expansion includes:

  • three 32-bed wards accommodating 96 acute in-patient beds
  • a 28-bed pandemic ward
  • three new operating theatres including one hybrid theatre
  • new intensive care unit
  • new theatre recovery spaces
  • expanded cardiology services
  • a fitted-out ground floor with kitchen, café hub, offices, transit lounge, emergency control room, morgue and communications rooms
  • new electrical and lift infrastructure
  • future provision for a helipad
  • a new Central Sterile Supply Unit
  • equipment loan centre
  • bio-medical engineering
  • loading dock and other back of house functions.

The Northern Hospital - stage 2 expansion project aimed to achieve the following benefits:

Better access to services

The expansion aimed to improve access for patients by redesigning existing services and adding new ones. This allows approximately 10,000 extra patients to be treated each year.

Fewer ambulance bypasses

More state-of-the-art facilities and services will reduce the number of ambulance bypasses to other hospitals. This means that patients can be treated faster, and closer to home.

Ready for future expansions

The expansion included additional floor space for future bed expansion.

This project was delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with:

  • Kane (builder)
