Wangaratta Hospital redevelopment

Location 35-47 Green Street, Wangaratta, Victoria, 3677, Australia

The $22.9 million redevelopment of Wangaratta Hospital was completed in December 2022.

Funded via the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, the expansion is helping meet the growing demand for healthcare services in northeast Victoria.

The redevelopment delivered a 12-bed intensive care unit and an eight-bed short stay unit. The emergency department was expanded to include more treatment spaces, an isolation room and a behavioural assessment room.

The project added a new eight-bed paediatric ward with ensuites and parent accommodation. A new medical ward with 11 extra medical beds was also built, to create two 20-bed inpatient units.

The $790 million Regional Health Infrastructure Fund is the largest grant program of its kind in Victoria. It provides vital government funding to rural and regional public health and residential aged care services across Victoria. This funding enables these services to continue to provide safe and efficient care to local communities.

The Wangaratta Hospital redevelopment delivered:

  • a new 12-bed intensive care unit
  • expanded emergency department with additional treatment spaces, isolation room and a behavioural assessment room
  • a new eight-bed short stay unit
  • new paediatric ward with eight single rooms, parent accommodation and kids’ playroom
  • 11 additional medical beds to create two 20-bed inpatient units
  • engineering infrastructure upgrades.

The Wangaratta Hospital redevelopment aims to achieve the following benefits:

More services to meet growing demand

The redevelopment has increased the level and quality of services, improved wait times and support the increasing demand for services in the region.

Treating more patients closer to home

The expanded emergency department, which includes additional treatment spaces, is providing more urgent care for communities closer to home.

Improved accessibility

Relocating the existing paediatric and women’s care units into a new location is also providing improved accessibility.

Local jobs

The redevelopment created approximately 60 jobs during construction, providing employment opportunities for local tradespeople and businesses.

Funding for this project was administered by the Victorian Health Building Authority through the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

This project was being delivered by Northeast Health Wangaratta in partnership with:
