Major works start and designs released for Casey Hospital ED expansion

Major construction work is underway, a key step toward better emergency care for families in Melbourne’s south-east.

The project will deliver new treatment spaces and upgraded facilities including:

• additional immediate care cubicles
• short stay beds
• resuscitation bays
• ambulatory care spaces
• procedure rooms
• dedicated consult areas
• a mental health zone
• satellite imaging.

It will also include a specially designed children’s emergency department zone. This zone will provide a private, calm and compassionate environment for children to receive emergency care.

The new emergency department will:

• be a two-storey free-standing building
• link to the existing hospital for patient transfers
• staff and visitor access
• have a clearly visible entry, so visitors can safely and easily drop off their family or friend
• have a separate adult and triage reception areas.

Designed to provide comfort and connection to the natural world

The exterior design uses the existing Casey Hospital as a guide to create a sense of connection.

The interior design is inspired by Casey’s local wildlife, with each department using its own colours based on the area’s plants and animals.

Pink in the children’s care areas is inspired by local plants, while green in the adult immediate care areas comes from the graceful leek orchid.

The design also includes skylights in waiting areas and patient treatment bays for natural light, creating a calming, healing environment.

These colours are also helpful for wayfinding, clearly showing different clinical areas.
