New aged care facility taking shape in Orbost
Orbost Regional Health’s new residential aged care facility is one step closer to providing older Victorians in East Gippsland the care and comfort they deserve, with the $45.36 million project reaching a major construction milestone.
The new aged care facility is structurally complete, paving the way for the building’s striking façade and internal fit-out to progress.
On track to be completed in late 2026, it will have 38 beds and will replace Orbost Regional Health’s ageing Lochiel House and Waratah Lodge facilities.

Building for comfort, independence and dignity
Built over two-levels, the facility has been carefully designed to maximise residents’ independence and feel as homely as possible.
Each of the 38-bedrooms will have its own ensuite bathroom - and each bedroom is part of a small ‘household’ with its own dedicated kitchen, dining room, lounge and sitting areas.
The facility will also feature a community room, reflection room and other common areas like a café and hair salon for residents to interact with each other and with their family and friends.
Dementia-friendly design at heart
People with dementia account for around half of residents in all residential aged care facilities, and with even higher instances in public sector residential aged care, dementia-friendly design is at the heart of this new facility.
By making it simple and intuitive to get around with colours and shapes chosen to encourage natural movements throughout the building, residents are able to be more independent – avoiding confusion and anxiety.
Likewise, natural light and open area views throughout the building will connect residents with green space and fresh air to maintain their physical and mental wellbeing.
Supporting jobs and the local economy
Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Orbost Regional Health and builder SJ Higgins, more than 200 workers have contributed to the project so far, with over half of contractors local to East Gippsland.
