New Melton Hospital celebrates local legends with sky-high honours

Four tower cranes on the new Melton Hospital construction site have been named after locals.

The four cranes celebrate Mandy Cullen, Eddie Spiteri, Mićo Kamenjarin and Henry Ho.

Western Health and Lendlease nominated these individuals in recognition of their passion for healthcare, construction and their contributions to local community.

In this video, hear their stories.

Eddie Spiteri: I never thought I'd have a crane named after me. It's very humbling.

Mandy Cullen: I was in shock when I learned that I had been nominated.

Emma Colman: We've got six cranes on the New Melton Hospital site and four of them have been named. It's so exciting that we are naming four cranes after inspiring locals from the west.

Professor Russell Harrison: Mandy stood out for her leadership, her care, her compassion and really extolling those virtues of Western Health into best care. Eddie has created that culture of excellence in engineering and has really driven the fact that our systems and processes and facilities are reliable to give that best care to our communities.

[Images: Robbie Dragovic, Senior Safety Manager, Lendlease speaks to camera, footage of the construction site]

Robbie Dragovic: Mitch was a crane operator and part of the crane crew for over 30 years. Mitch sadly passed away last year. He's left an awesome reputation in the industry.

[Images: Lisa Davie, Construction Manager, Lendlease and Henry, community member, speak to camera, footage of Henry on the construction site wearing a high-vis vest and hard hat interacting with workers]

Lisa Davie: We picked Henry to be one of the crane names because he's come and visited our site a few times with his carer and he's got a real keen interest in construction sites.

Lisa: Tower cranes go up right at the start of the project. It's sort of symbolising the project coming out of the ground and they stand there as a figure for the whole community to look at. So by naming the cranes, it's our way of engaging with the community, getting people to understand what's going on and really be a part of the journey to bring this project to life.

Mandy: Incredibly honoured when I learned that it had been members of my team that had done that.

[Images: Robbie speaks to camera, image of Mitch]

Robbie: Mitch was an all-round nice bloke and I'm glad that the team came up collectively together to put his name up there.

Eddie: In a way, the crane is very similar to what I used to do, always looking and making sure everything fits in their right place.

[Images: Lisa and Henry speak to camera, Henry walking through the construction site saying hello to a worker]

Lisa: Henry got such engagement with his community. He's even teaching us some of the little facts about some of the plant and equipment we have on-site.

[Images: Artist’s impression footage of the new Melton Hospital, Mandy and Eddie speak to camera]

Mandy: New Melton Hospital will mean for patients they don't need to travel for care.

Eddie: It's going to be an all-electric, high-tech building with new equipment, medical services, and it’ll have everything right there.

[Images: Lisa and Henry speak to camera]

Lisa: Are you pretty proud?

Henry: Yeah, proud. I'm proud of myself.

Lisa: Yeah. As you should be, definitely.

The names behind the cranes

Eddie Spiteri

‘Eddie’ the crane recognises Eddie Spiteri, recently retired Chief Engineer – Western Health. Eddie dedicated two decades to ensuring the safety, reliability and performance at many Western Health facilities across Melbourne’s west before they were operational such as Sunshine Hospital and new Footscray Hospital.

A respected leader, Eddie put the patient experience and staff wellness at the heart of his work.

Mandy Cullen

‘Mandy’ the crane honours Mandy Cullen, Manager of Ambulatory Services – Western Health at Melton Health and Community Services since its opening in 2007. A lifelong Melton local, Mandy is passionate about what the new Melton Hospital will mean for her community.

Mandy is acknowledged for creating an excellent work culture and supporting staff members so they can provide quality care for the community.

Mićo Kamenjarin

‘Mićo’ the crane commemorates Mićo Kamenjarin, a respected Lendlease crane operator, widely known as ‘Mitch’. Mitch is honoured posthumously after passing from cancer in mid-2025.

Mitch worked for Lendlease for four decades, on some of Victoria’s major builds such as Monash Children’s Hospital and Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital, building strong connections with construction teams across the state.

Mitch’s wife, three children and colleagues are proud to see his name carried on.

Henry Ho

‘Henry’ the crane celebrates Henry Ho, a passionate local with a special interest in construction and machinery.

Henry often passes the new Melton Hospital site to check out progress. The Lendlease crew first met Henry after noticing him watching the project from across the road, outside the work zone. From there a conversation began and now he has a strong connection with the team on the ground.

He enjoys researching and learning about large infrastructure projects and his technical knowledge has impressed the workers. Henry’s enthusiasm is inspiring, and he brings a positive energy to the team on-site.
