Construction on the Werribee Mercy Hospital emergency department expansion is progressing well, with works complete on the front and rear canopies.
These canopies will provide important weather-protected access for patients, visitors and staff, while supporting the safe and efficient movement of emergency services on site.
Emergency services will have direct access to the rear canopy with the design focused on separating public traffic from emergency vehicle movement and removing the need for ambulances to use the public drop off zone.
So far more than 820 construction workers have contributed more than 203,844 hours to the project, which is on track for completion mid this year.
The new emergency department is set to double current capacity and increase patient treatment spaces from 33 to 67, including dedicated areas for paediatrics and adult mental health.
The project is part of a $280 million package boosting capacity at emergency departments in two of Melbourne’s fastest growing suburbs, which also includes the Casey Hospital in Berwick.
It is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Mercy Health and builder Besix Watpac.
