The first stage of the Northern Hospital redevelopment has reached a major milestone, with the new four-storey Ambulatory Care Centre now structurally complete.
Progress on stage one
Stage one of the project is delivering a new Ambulatory Care Centre, providing modern outpatient, clinical care and administration spaces. It will also include a ground link to the existing facility.
Construction is progressing well, with works now focused on façade installation and internal fit-out. Stage one is on track for completion in mid-2026.
Next stage underway
Planning and preparations for stage two are underway, with John Holland appointed as the managing contractor. Stage two of the redevelopment will deliver a new emergency department and inpatient unit tower on Cooper Street.
Designs take inspiration from local basalt geology, waterways and landscapes. Warm grey, ochre and green tones will reflect the natural character of Melbourne’s northern suburbs and connect the new facilities with the surrounding precinct.
Supporting jobs and the local community
The redevelopment of the Northern Hospital will support up to 2,200 jobs across both stages of construction.
Once complete, the redevelopment will increase the number of treatment spaces to almost 200 and when fully operational will support an extra 30,000 emergency patients per year.
The redevelopment will help meet the growing healthcare needs of Melbourne’s north and deliver expanded and improved facilities and enhanced services to the community.
The project is being delivered in two stages and is expected to be completed in late 2029.
