Structural works start on Ballarat Base Hospital’s new hospital tower
Structural works on the $655 million Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment’s new hospital tower have started, marking a major construction milestone.
With the help of more than 580 workers, 200 being locals, demolition of existing buildings, excavation, and foundational works are now complete.
This has paved the way for structural works to progress, with the first major concrete pours to form the base of the new hospital tower.
Three tower cranes are now in place, named after remarkable locals Josie Ashmore, Wasek Faisal, Ashton Kline and Grant Monks.
Construction is on track for completion in 2027.

Transforming services at Ballarat Base Hospital
The new hospital tower will transform services at Ballarat Base with:
- a new main entrance off Sturt Street
- a new emergency department
- 100 more inpatient and short stay beds
- a new state-of-the-art theatre suite
- a new helipad
- a new and expanded women and children’s hub
- a new and expanded critical care floor.
The redevelopment has already delivered a new Central Energy Plant and Support Services (CEPSS) building on Drummond Street, and an expansion to the multi-deck carpark which provides an additional 400 parking spaces.
Site activity
Since main works started:
- 241 retention piles have been installed
- more than 31,000 cubic metres of soil has been removed from the ground
- more than 202,900 combined hours have been worked
- around 95 per cent of the demolition materials are being recycled.
The redevelopment is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, in partnership with Grampians Health and Built.
