New facilities

The Monash Medical Centre Tower will ensure the community has modern facilities that meet the needs of the growing community.

The new seven storey tower will be built above the hospital’s newly expanded emergency department.

Site progress

Major construction started earlier this year. Works are powering ahead with over 350 workers inducted on-site in total. The hospital’s tower structure is starting to rise out of the ground with work underway to install structural steel for the first two levels of the new tower.

The ambulance entrance has moved from Dixon Street to a new temporary Ambulance carpark at the main entrance.

Foundations are well set, with piling works now complete.

The lift core of the new tower has been excavated, and concrete ground slab has been poured.

Coming up

  • The concrete structure will continue from the third level of the new tower to its maximum height.
  • The external façade works are expected to start later in the year.

Did you know?

  • Over 350 workers have been inducted into the site so far – that’s about 17 full F1 pit crews
  • Approximately to date, 8,300 cubic metres of concrete – that can fill more than three Olympic sized swimming pools
  • The construction site is quite large, taking up 26,147 square metres of construction area – more than three and a half soccer fields
  • More than 950 tonnes of steel reinforcement and post-tensioning will be used – as much as about 160 African elephants.

Your new hospital tower

Managed by Monash Health, the Monash Medical Centre Tower Expansion project will be built above the newly expanded emergency department on the north-west corner of the site. It will provide:

  • New operating theatres
  • more pre-operative and post-operative beds
  • new birthing suites
  • more maternity beds
  • a new intensive care unit
  • a new Clinical Sterile Services Department.

Meet Dr Lift and Nurse Strong

Two massive tower cranes arrived on site in May. This marked a significant milestone for the project, with major construction now well underway. The cranes will stay on site until late 2027 supporting concrete pouring, the moving of equipment, installation of facades and transportation of building materials such as structural steel, precast glass panels and services equipment.

To celebrate, Monash Health asked local children to make the project their own by naming the two tower cranes on site. Patients and visitors of the Monash Children’s Hospital were asked to nominate names via an online form.

The winning names, Dr Lift and Nurse Strong, were submitted by the families of two young Monash Children’s Hospital patients who are now part of the project's story.

Having both been patients at the hospital, they share a special connection with other young families and chose names that they hope will inspire and uplift those facing difficult times.

Meet the project team

We asked some of the project delivery team what their favourite part of the project was.

'As someone who grew up in Clayton and has used Monash Medical Centre, the hospital holds a special place in my heart. It has been incredibly rewarding to see this important healthcare facility continue to grow and expand. Being part of a project that will enhance healthcare services for the local community and support future generations is especially meaningful to me. I’m excited to see the completed facility and the lasting positive impact it will have on patients, families, staff and the wider community for years to come.'

'The Monash Project represents a significant investment in healthcare for the Victorians within the Monash catchment area. What excites me most is the opportunity to help deliver a world-class facility that will transform patient care across operating theatres, hybrid operating theatres, Intensive Care and Birthing. Knowing that this project will support some of the most critically unwell patients, while enhancing care for future generations, gives our work a strong sense of purpose. It is a privilege to contribute to such a significant project and to help deliver this for Monash Health and the Victorian community on behalf of VIDA Health.'
