Welcome to our first new Melton Hospital project newsletter.

Site progress

It has been 12 months since major construction got underway. Work is powering ahead with around 350 workers on-site daily. The hospital’s structure is starting to rise out of the ground with work underway to pour the first few floors.

Concrete construction of the basement and ground levels finished
Concrete slab pours underway from ground to level three
Jump form systems established and 17 cores in construction
Large stormwater tank system installed for rainwater management
Asphalting for temporary access roads around the site

Coming up

Structural concrete slab pours will continue
Concrete cores will be poured and raised to upper levels (vertical lift and stairwell shafts)
Structural works will start on multi-deck carpark building
Permanent power infrastructure works

Jump forms and cores

A jump form is a self-climbing formwork system used to construct vertical concrete elements called cores. The concrete cores surround lifts and staircases and help carry the weight of the building. The jump forms climb from one level to the next as construction progresses, providing a safe, enclosed working platform for crews to pour and raise the cores.

Did you know?

At almost 60,000 square metres, the site of the hospital is about three times the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The size of the site means future potential for the hospital to expand and nearly double its capacity over time to grow with the community.

Your new hospital

The Victorian Government has committed more than $900 million to deliver the new Melton Hospital in Cobblebank. Construction is on track to be completed in 2029.

Melton Hospital is an important addition to the network in the west including Footscray, Sunshine, Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh hospitals. It’ll ensure the people of Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne get the care they need, close to home.

The new hospital will include:

274 beds
a 24/7 emergency department
an intensive care unit
operating theatres
maternity and neonatal services
mental health services, radiology services and outpatient care
a new education and training hub for doctors and nurses.

Once completed, it will have capacity to treat 130,000 patients each year and see almost 60,000 presentations in the emergency department.

It will be Victoria’s first all-electric hospital and use carbon neutral power from day one of operations.

Four cranes with four special names

We’ve named four cranes on the construction site after western suburb locals – Mandy Cullen, Eddie Spiteri, Mićo Kamenjarin and Henry Ho.

Meet the people behind the names

Mandy

Manager of Ambulatory Services, Western Health

Mandy is a lifelong Melton local and has been Manager of Ambulatory Services at Melton Health and Community Services since its opening in 2007. Mandy is acknowledged for creating an excellent work culture and supporting her team to provide quality care for her community.

Eddie

Retired Chief Engineer, Western Health

Eddie dedicated two decades to ensuring the safety, reliability and performance at many Western Health facilities across Melbourne’s west. Eddie is a respected leader who always put the patient experience and staff wellness at the heart of his work.

Mićo

Former crane operator, Lendlease

Mićo was a respected Lendlease crane operator, widely known as ‘Mitch’. The crane is named in his memory after his passing from cancer in 2025. He worked for Lendlease for four decades, on some of Victoria’s major build. Mićo’s wife, three children and colleagues are proud to see his name carried on.

Henry

Community member

Henry has a special interest in construction and machinery. The Lendlease crew first met Henry after noticing him watching the site progress from across the road, outside the work zone. He enjoys researching and learning about infrastructure projects and his technical knowledge has impressed the team.

Building careers

The new Melton Hospital project is investing in young people – so far more than 18,700 hours of work on-site has been completed by apprentices, trainees and cadets.

Melton students take next steps

A group of year 11 and 12 students from Melton Secondary College completed the first ‘Next Steps’ building and construction pathway program.

Over 15 weeks, they explored what a future in the industry looks like, including visits to the new Melton Hospital site to see the project in action. The experience enabled students to:

build new skills and connections
learn about pathways into apprenticeships
get real industry experience.

‘Next Steps’ is a collaboration between Lendlease, the new Melton Hospital project, Apprenticeships Victoria and Kangan Institute TAFE.

It aims to create career and education pathways for young people who may otherwise disengage from traditional education.

Acknowledgement of Country

The new Melton Hospital project acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, Wadawarrung and Bunurong people of the Kulin Nations, the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which the hospital is being built and pay our respects to their Elders, past and present.
