Download the guidelines

Our engineering guidelines inform the development of design and specification documentation for healthcare facilities.

The goal of a healthcare facility is to improve the health and well-being of the occupants. Engineering services within a healthcare facility are a fundamental part of achieving this.

The 'Engineering guidelines for healthcare facilities' are intended to inform, educate and develop skill across the industry. They allow designers to apply their knowledge and skills to deliver the performance requirements within defined parameters.

This document should be referenced alongside the Australian health facility guidelines. An understanding of the intent of these documents is expected of all designers, together with advice on how this intent can be best achieved within the context of a project.

The guidelines are applicable to all healthcare building and refurbishment projects delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority.

The 'Engineering guidelines for healthcare facilities' are available in six volumes:

Volume 1 applies to all disciplines and outlines the fundamental principles for the design of engineering services in healthcare facilities. The remaining volumes are discipline-specific and can be used alone or with the other volumes.
